The Digging of the Squirrels

The squirrels are at it again.

Yesterday I noticed that the squirrels were digging in the porch planter.  This wouldn't have been a big deal, except that I had just finished planting some peppermint and anise seeds.  Naturally, I decided that it was in my best interest to cover the area with my trademark milk jug halves in order to protect the seeds from my furry little friends.  I've come to realize that they have no interest in the actual seeds I plant... they simply want a nice place to hide their goodies.  I placed a halved jug over the peppermint area, and another over the anise area.

This morning I walked out onto the porch to see how my work fared.  This is what I discovered:

Holes, holes, holes...

Not only that. but you'll notice only one halved milk jug.  The anise seeds are still protected.  The peppermint, on the other hand...

No jug.  Just one big hole where it used to be.

You'd think that I'd be angry.  Surprisingly, though, I'm not.  After careful consideration, I realized that the area that was destroyed was the same place that I had found a hole the day before.  Inside that hole was a walnut.  My conclusion?  My squirrel buddy was simply trying to recover the treasure he had buried the day before.

Sadly, half of a milk jug is currently sitting in some unknown location.  I didn't see it anywhere when I went outside to check up on my garden planter, so I'll have to search the area in order to find it.

I think it's time to do a bit more research into the subject of squirrels.  They're everywhere around here, and I'll need to work with them.  I actually enjoy watching them go about their business, and I'd rather not go into a full scale battle with them.  They're crafty, and I know that in the end they'll win.  I prefer to work with them, rather than against them.

Any ideas on how to go about that?  Being new to this region, I'm interested in any advice I can find!  I don't actually mind the digging... I'd just prefer if it was done a few inches away from my milk jugs!
