Glass Over Plastic: Food for Thought

I've been working on switching all of my storage containers over to glass, rather than plastic.  Why?  Well, glass lasts way longer in my household, which is really surprising, when you consider I have a three year old daughter.  The many times that I've microwaved my plastic containers (even though you're not supposed to) is a huge factor in my household plastic's short life.

Glass is also easier to clean.  Anything made using tomato as the main ingredient stains my plastic with a particularly nasty orange hue.  Furthermore, mold from food left in the fridge for too long can find every single minuscule crack or fold to attach itself to, and mold removal just feels all-out impossible at that point.  Glass, on the other hand, doesn't get that nasty orange stain, and can be boiled to remove contaminants like mold.

Plastic does have its good points, however.

- It takes less energy to recycle a plastic container that's outlived its usefulness, than it does to recycle a glass container that's met its end.

- Plastic is much lighter than glass.

I have to admit, though, that I've never been very comfortable with eating or drinking anything that has been contained within a package that's basically made from oil, but for the majority of my life I've had very little choice in the matter.

Think about the things you commonly buy at the grocery store.  Cheese is wrapped in plastic.  Yogurt containers?  Plastic, as well. I drink milk every day... and it comes in a plastic jug.  Then, if you don't have bags of your own, what do you end up walking out with most of the time?

Plastic grocery bags.  Ugh.

Fortunately, I've just discovered a dairy that's about 45 minutes away from my house that actually uses refillable glass bottles!!!  The cows are grass fed.

This
is
PERFECT!

Yeah, I'm a little excited...

I do believe I'll be taking a trip to Cedar Summit Farm tomorrow!
