As you can see, my daughter had a great time breaking birdseed filled eggs over my head. Of course, being three years old, she made me kneel down so that she could do it!
Sadly, I wasn't able to make many at all. One of my dogs found about half of the shells I was drying, so I was left with only six. I hid those six cascarones, then had my daughter locate them before finally breaking them over our heads, squealing with joy.
Once we finished, clean up was much easier than the standard confetti filled cascarones clean up, as you can see here, as there was very little mess. Just a few egg shells.
Bird seed, of course, could be left behind for any backyard visitors. Even the little shell pieces are safe to leave behind, as they'll provide grit to aid in birds' digestion. The larger pieces will simply be placed in my compost heap. As long as the shells are clean, after all, they're safe to use in compost.
No landfill waste, at all, but plenty of fun. Success!
Granted, this wasn't nearly as pretty as the bright, confetti filled cascarones that my mother-in-law got last year, but it's a nice substitute. I'd definitely do it again!
