Second Tier Complete!

I've completed work on the second tier of my garden at the base of the walnut tree in the backyard.

This tier is quite obviously twice the size of the first, which I had placed 2 hosta bulb cuttings into.  My original idea was to place peppermint inside this tier, but I've had a change of heart.  Rather, I've decided to place root vegetables in this area.

They needed something to separate them, though, because I needed to have a clear way of recognizing the seeded areas.  I was fortunate that the separating plant was literally given to me today by the owner of the garden center.

 Violets!!!

These violets are slightly different from the ones growing wild in my yard, however.  They're white with blue lines radiating out from inside the flower.  Absolutely beautiful!  Since violets are quite nutritional, I figure they qualify as a plant that can be placed in my vegetable tier.

Yeah, I know... I'm cheating a bit.  It's pretty exciting, though!

On the left side of the violets I've placed parsnip seeds.  Parsnips are actually native to Minnesota, so I feel I'll have great luck with them.  And bonus!  They can be harvested even if the ground freezes over!  Wow!

On the right side of the violets I've placed icicle radish seeds.  Radishes are supposed to be wildly successful in soil that's been invaded by black walnut, so I think I'll have great success there, as well.

So far I've planted the seeds sparingly.  I want to harvest a bit at a time, rather than all at once, so I'm spacing out my plantings.  I'll place more seeds in the soil in about two weeks... and then in another two weeks.

You get the picture.

Now that I've completed work on the second tier of this garden, it's time to figure out the next planting zone.  Should it be the edges of the fence gate so that we're greeted by plants immediately upon entering this area of the yard, or should it be the opposite side of these tiers, effectively creating a walkway?

Decisions, decisions...
